Where Miniseeds grow mighty trees

Last week we had an “Entrepreneur Day”. The kids were soooooo excited to sell their homemade goods or foods or sell their special service & skills. A big thank you to the parents who really put some effort in it and let their kids enjoy the process. You truly made our day!

Amazing books

We started off with reading out loud some really great books about what it takes to become and be an Entrepreneur. If you are thinking about organizing  an Entrepreneur Day yourself, I can really recommend the following books.

On a very hot summer day, a young girl decides to sell lemonade. But when she goes outside she finds too many  other young entrepreneurs on her street with the same idea. So she sets off with her lemonade stand and ends up at the river’s edge where she discovers a most unexpected, quirky and very thirsty clientele. Written by Gideon Sterer.

This is one of my favourites! The lazy bear becomes a business partner of a very clever Hare. Bear thinks he is in control, but he isn’t, although he agrees to every idea of this clever  Hare. Money is not your only resource when it comes to becoming an entrepreneur. Sometimes we can also use our skills and cleverness to make it happen. And sometimes it takes time… Written by Janet Stevens.

Written by Jamie Deenihan, tells about a girl who has a long list of presents she wishes for her birthday. She can barely hide her disappointment when her grandma gives her a lemontree. When she follows the funny instructions, the tree grows and gives lemons…. Grandma helps her making the best lemonade ever and that might bring exactly what she wished for .

What about this day?

This “Entrepreneur day” is a day that gives the children, even at this young age,  the opportunity to explore the concept of trading or paying and being payed in exchange of goods, skills or service in every possible way. School is preparing you for life. You will learn about your talents, you will learn skills and problems will become opportunities to create new solutions.

How to do it...

We informed our parents about this idea and listed a few ideas for this Entrepreneur day that they could discuss with their children (selling foods, using skills like nail polishing , selling toys, selling self made goods). The plan was to organize two days. On the first day, half of the group would be “sellers” and the other half would be “buyers”. The buyers would bring  R20 in coins and sellers would sell from R1-R5 per item. The second day it would be the other way around. The kids were all so excited and parents really let their kids enjoy the proces.. Kids learned that it takes time and organization to get that far to earn money. We had soooo much fun. I was told to first go get money when I tried to pick a fat koek……

Next year we will definitely organize an Entrepreneur day again and take it to the next level.
